A black eye is essentially a bruise around the eye.Hard blow damage tissue and breaks tiny capillaries.Blood and other fluids then collection in the space around the eye, resulting in swelling and a very dark blue discoloration. As the bruise heals, the pooled blood is slowly resorbed, usually producing a kaleidoscope of colours.

First step: Apply something cold to the area. It helps ease swelling and narrows your blood vessels. That will stop bleeding below your skin. Make a crushed ice pack, grab a bag of frozen veggies, or use a cold gel pack. Wrap it in a cloth so it doesn’t have direct contact with your skin. Hold it to your eye for 10 minutes intervals every 1 to 2 hours. Take 10 minutes off so the ice doesn’t damage your skin.

Seek medical help after any eye injury because it’s difficult to judge the true extent of damage.
Most black eyes resolve on their own in a week or two. However,if the eye becomes increasingly swollen and inflamed or if you experienced headache, blurred vision or any other vision problems see your doctor.

Apply a cloth wrapped ice pack(a gel pack or a bag of frozen vegetable) for 10 to 15 minutes every hour you’re awake for the first two days. This will ease swelling and help constrict blood vessel, reducing the pooling of blood. After 48 hours apply warm moist compresses to increase circulation and speed healing.

A soaked tea bag is another home remedy for bruising.Substances in tea are astringent and also anti-inflammatory.Saturate a tea bag of black or green tea, squeeze out the excess water and hold gently to the bruised area.Repeat several time a day.

Arnica has been used for centuries to treat injuries.Dab a little arnica gel on the bruised skin around a black eye several times a day.

Be careful not to get any arnica gel in eye.

Pineapple and papaya are two fruits that can help in treating a black eye. Both are rich in antioxidants that speed up the healing process of almost any kind of injury that causes discoloration of the skin.
These fruits have enzymes that soften and heal the skin. To reap the benefits, you can either:

Drink these fruit juices or simply eat the fruits.

Putting a raw piece of meat on a black eye may be popular in the movies but don’t meat can harbour all sorts of bacteria that you don’t want anywhere near your eyes.
